THE WOODS
I grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania, an area that was once inhabited by the lumberjacks who 'explored' the woods of the Northeastern United States. These lumberjacks had a unique set of myths and legends that are the origins of many of the stories I grew up hearing, and many of the beasts we were warned to watch out for when we went to play in the woods. The creatures and cryptids from these stories are partially localized tales, but many are prominent figures in pop culture now, as public intrigue in cryptozoology has increased.
I do think it's important to note that this subset of folklore, while incredibly unique in many aspects, was deeply influenced by the native peoples who were already living in the area.
These myths and creatures are deeply representative of a people trying to explain and understand the fears and trials of being in an unfamiliar landscape with new flora and fauna.
This series pulls heavily from these tales, though many varying interpretations were referenced, and many are pulled from personal experience with local and living lore as well.
